Some Wisdom about Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth removal is a common procedure for adults. This is done because usually the tooth emerges out of alignment. Do not let your wisdom tooth and the problems it brings affect your life!

Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are the last teeth in the mouth to develop after the second or 12-year molars. They are completely formed at approximately 17 to 19 years of age. As they develop, they attempt to erupt into the oral cavity by the late teens or early twenties. Although many individuals live healthy lives with these molars in place, often times these teeth become trapped beneath the gum line and “trapped” behind the second molars because of the lack of space in the dental arch to allow them to erupt normally. When third molars do not erupt or are “locked” in the bone, they are referred to as “impacted.

Common Wisdom Teeth Problems

Majority of the people today have at least one impacted wisdom tooth in their oral cavity. The oral and maxillofacial surgeons at Pristine Dental and Facial Care have vast expertise extracting impacted wisdom teeth in Chandigarh.

The lack of eruption or partial eruption can cause these molars to produce various symptoms and issues that may require surgical attention. These include:

  • Infection in surrounding bone and soft tissue
  • Pain and headaches
  • Caries (tooth decay or cavities)
  • Erosion into the second molars
  • Shifting of adjacent teeth
  • Bleeding of the gums while brushing
  • Cyst formation surrounding the wisdom tooth

How is Wisdom teeth removal done?

Our Oral Surgeon will first conduct a thorough clinical examination using digital X-rays to determine the position of the tooth and identify the safest and most effective plan to have it removed. This would also determine the wisdom tooth removal cost which your dentist will roughly explain before the procedure.

Firstly, Local Anesthesia will be administered to numb the region. Following this extraction is done by loosening the tooth from the socket. If needed, our Oral Surgeon will remove some bone and gums to make teeth removal easier.

For wisdom teeth that are severely impacted, we may recommend to perform the procedure under intravenous sedation / concious sedation due to the difficulty of the extractions. This allows the surgeon to perform the procedure with minimal discomfort to the patient.

What happens after wisdom teeth removal

Getting your third molar removed by experienced dentists can greatly reduce the risks that come with surgery. Everything will be explained to you from the consultation up to the potential scenarios while you are in recovery such as, 24 hours after your surgical third molar removal, some bleeding, swelling, and pain can be expected.

Especially for difficult cases that required bone and gum removal. These are all mild and will subside within a day.

Post operatively patients are often asked to take antibiotics and pain medicine as prescribed.

Patients are also asked to eat a soft diet and apply ice to the sides of their face to help minimize pain and swelling.

Some tips you can do to assist with your recovery also include gargling with warm salt water to aid in discomfort, avoid using straws when drinking as that may agitate the wound and try to get as much rest as possible.

Your Pristine oral and maxillofacial surgeon will be glad to explain you the procedure in great detail , give you diet and other precautions, as well as answer any other questions you may have.
